Whitman was born in Otavalo. He started with his artistic studies in his city, but
settled in Quito, where he finished his studies with the "Medalla Ciudad de Quito",
offered to the best graduate from the Art School at the Central University.
Whitman started his artistic career with strong expressionism paintings, full of
violent brush-strokes and strong lines. Later, he got into Andean expressionism,
painting sweet faces with huge black eyes, surrounded by flowers and fruits over a
baroque background full of texture and shapes.
