  • Born 1978 in Virginia, USA Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY Langdon Graves is a Virginia-born, Brooklyn, NY-based artist who received her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and her MFA from Parsons in New York City in 2007. She has had solo shows in Richmond, New York and Boston and has participated in group shows throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. She has attended the Fountainhead Residency in Miami and participated in The Netherlands’ Kunstenaarsinitiatief Residency and Exhibition program in 2011. She is also a recent recipient of Canson and Beautiful Decay’s Wet Paint Grant. In her recent work, Langdon presents an exploration of the human body through fragments of bone, tissue, metaphor and belief, inspired by the ancient Greek philosophical treatise On Nature by Empedocles of Acragas. Regarded as the first physical materialist and the father of the four primary elements of matter, Empedocles’ theories planted the seeds for the development of atomist theory. In verse rich with imagery he describes a slow evolutionary scenario not unlike Darwin’s of the formation of species. His cosmogony is based on a continuous cycle he calls Philia and Neikos, throughout which all matter in the universe fluctuates between phases of order and chaos, coming together or splitting apart.
